CARPENTRY PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Presented with an opportunity to offer pre-apprenticeship training at the community level, a course was designed to provide 12 weeks of upgrading for carpentry pre-apprentices which includes full student access to social supports, tutorial assistance, traditional teachers and peer mentorship.  Certified teachers teach trades math and communications courses.  The students also develop their computer skills while they participate in employment readiness activities, practice interview skills, polish resumes, learn how to write effective cover letters, and sharpen research skills.  The model-building component has the students using industrial construction building machinery and equipment in a fully-equipped carpentry shop.   All of the participants earn their certificates for First Aid, WHMIS and fall protection training.  Students may be offered short-term employment contracts where their valued skills as carpenters will be put to the test
